Holiday To Adventure | home |
It started in the week when Carol Vorderman pulled the letters WAKNER out on one episode of Countdown and followed her masterpiece up on the adjacent episode by pulling out YIT. With such antics in England, why would anyone even contemplate adventures overseas?
However, plans had to be made. David Cowley, who used to live with me, back in the halcyon days of my running the student union, was getting married - in Italy - to Chicca. On a recent visit to Newcastle, he had invited us to their union, citing a multitude of reasons why we should come, the primary one being “You’ll not get cheaper air tickets than these - I’m doing a block booking.”.
As it happens, I always thought that I got right on David’s nerves and that he’d be glad never to see me again - indeed, we did have some rather petty and awkward exchanges while we lived together and I’d taken his “you must come and visit us in XXXX” as him being polite. Well, it seems that since there were faults on both sides in our exchanges, and since he’s a forgiving sort, that he genuinely did want to invite us along. I say us, since Caroline and David also got to know each other, since Caroline was constant visitor to the point of resident during the time David lived here. And so we agreed to “buy tickets to the wedding” and join in the fun.
At David’s suggestion, and because we’d never had a holiday together - except for the occasional weekend break - Cambridge being a personal favourite - we also decided to stay on after the wedding and do our own thing. The return flight date was adjusted accordingly and we were to make our own arrangements for fun and frolics after the majority of the wedding guests were back, safely, in the United Kingdom of home. In the hope of improving on the enjoyment we had had in Cambridge, we decided to:
Thinking about it, the break in Cambridge was probably an experience easily surpassable and things were looking good.
