Edinburgh Fringe 2004 home

Week 4 - 29th - 30th August

This was when the show ended. That was that. I drove all the set and equipment back to Newcastle, turned around, drove back and rejoined the last couple of days of the Fringe, strangely aware that we'd done all we set out to do, and more, and that my life was about to be very very empty.

16.35 - Success - Adrian Poynton
****
Pleasance
On our arrival in Edinburgh we met Adrian Poynton who was doing a show at the Pleasance which started just as ours was finishing. There was no chance we'd get to see it until ours was over. On the day after I'd driven all of our show back to Newcastle and then returned to Edinburgh to celebrate, I took a friend to see what Adrian's show was about.

It was a one-man theatre piece with laughs. Adrian played the part of an actor who was unlucky in love and casting, fascinated by serial killers and on the brink of doing something rash.

When the something rash came along, it was a beautiful end to a well-thought-out piece. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

21.35 - Jacob's Bladder and other Libel Stories
**
Hill Street Theatre
Flyering can be a great way to meet people. One of the key figures on the flyering trail for us was a chap with a toilet on his shoulders. He was selling his show daily and we never quite managed to get to see it. However, at this last opportunity we came through for the guy.

I didn't enjoy this show. I think I'm not a fan of comic poetry unless it's very good. As a musical comedian, I also have higher standards for my musical comedy preferences than I'm able to meet, so other musical comedians may also fail to please me. In this case, some of the material was good and a lot of it was just filler. The music accompanied on the keyboard was, in places, quirky and interesting (few musical cliches in there). However, whenever he reached for the guitar, I wished for earplugs. I don't play guitar well myself, being a keyboard-player by training, but the standard of guitar-playing here was below that of beginner. It was awkward.

Still, I have a lot of respect for the work it takes to make any show, having done a lot of the work for my own alongside the likes of this performer. So, I applauded as best I could and was glad that I'd lent my support to a good flyering pal.

Shows/events seen this week: 2
Grand total: 27

Though I saw nowhere near as much as I might have hoped this year, I had personally performed in 67 different shows over the same period as I was attempting to, and usually failing to, watch things.
